As I moved through the 4th edition of The Immune System by Peter Parham, the word that kept coming to mind was cleaner, as in “the presentation of this section is so much cleaner than the previous edition.” I can only think that students, both advanced undergraduates and medical students, will have a positive response to this new shipshape version. If you are the instructor who has invested your efforts around the previous edition, don’t panic. Although perhaps not in the same location as the previous edition, you will still find the vast majority of figures and text with which you are familiar. Adopters of the previous edition can spruce up their course with the reorganized and revised fourth edition. For those instructors in the market for a new immunology textbook, they will find a clear and concise option in this edition.

The reorganization of topics in this latest edition clearly highlights key concepts that students felt were buried previously. This is best illustrated by what was, in the third edition, just two chapters covering innate immunity and the body’s defense against infection. The bodyguard 2004 download torrent. This material is now covered in a total of five separate chapters. Innate immunity is now divided into two chapters, immediate and induced, based on the temporal nature of the response to infection. This creates a clearer presentation of innate defense mechanisms, preformed barriers, and chemical defense mechanisms in the first, and pattern recognition, inflammation, and the acute phase response, along with a much improved presentation of natural killer (NK) cells, in the second. A similar strategy for the adaptive immune response to infection allows for more focused in-depth discussions of three key topics: 1) mucosal immunity to prevent infection; 2) secondary immune responses, immunologic memory, and vaccination; 3) NK cells, γδ T cells, and CD1-restricted T cells.

With the cleaner presentation of material comes significant decluttering in some areas. The introductory chapter is tidier. Gone are the adaptive immunity overview and stand-alone vaccination chapters. Still present are the core B-cell chapters and T-cell chapters, which received much-needed revision of the discussions of major histocompatibility complex, antigen processing and presentation, and T-cell-mediated immunity. Likewise, chapters on immunodeficiency and autoimmunity are still present, but have been revised to focus on clinical aspects and mechanisms of induction, respectively. The one misstep in decluttering is the sole focus on the Type I IgE-mediated reaction in the discussion of hypersensitivity. Parham has relegated Types II, III, and IV to mechanisms of transfusion reaction and chronic or acute transplant rejection, respectively, while treating their role in allergies as an afterthought.

Finally, a number of practical improvements better support student learning. Revisions to some figures and improved placement of figures and their legends, in general, facilitate acquisition of key concepts by integrating text, figure, and legend in a reader-friendly manner. Likewise, readers will find updated vocabulary and a better use of bolding for terminology. The addition of clipboard icons in the margins, throughout this edition, make linking clinical correlates, found in Case Studies in Immunology by Raif Geha and Luigi Notarangelo (1), easy for both student and instructor. The updated end-of-chapter questions in multiple-choice format are an additional plus for students not only now, but also as they study to take a national preparatory exam, such as the MCAT, GRE, or USMLE Step 1. These practical improvements, together with the noted content reorganization and revisions, make this edition a clear contender for the required textbook in an upper division undergraduate or medical school immunology course.
