CFW and PS3: The best console for emulation and classic gaming

I have recently started messing around with CFW on a PS3, and I have been really pleased with how much cool stuff you can do with it. With the newest exploits it is now possible to install customer firmware on all PS3 with factory firmware version 3.55 or newer. This includes all fat PS3 and most slim PS3 models. Unfortunately, this does not include super slims, or newer PS3 slims with factory firmware 3.56+, although other exploits exist for these consoles. Since this sub is mostly interested in emulation, I’ll be focusing on Redebug and CFW.

With CFW, you can:

  • Backup your PS3 games to ISO format, and transfer them to your PC to play on RCPS3

  • Install full fat retroarch with playlist, thumbnails, ect and tons of emulation cores

  • Install SCUMMVM, DOSbox, and VICE

  • Emulate virtually any PSX game with official emulation

  • Emulate many PS2 games with official emulation on any PS3 that supports CFW

You can also modify the XMB interface, adjust the fan curve on the PS3, monitor system temps, install linux, create homebrew apps, and all kinds of cool stuff. It’s a whole world of possibilities.

It is also worth mentioning that the PS3 supports Component, S-Video, and composite outputs for hooking up to HD or SD CRT, for more authentic console emulation.

This isn’t a tutorial or a guide per se, as there are lots of great videos online and that would make this post really long. Instead, I am going to talk about the general process for installing firmware and running ROMs, ISO, and backing up PS3 games for RCPS3 (a PS3 emulator for PCs), as well as some of the classic games available for purchase on the PS3. Add it all together, and the PS3 can arguably play more games classic games than any other home console.

The method for installing CFW is pretty simple. You can download and “install” a spoof update to check your factory firmware. If you are 3.55 or earlier then you are good to go. There are three versions of the PS3 exploit. I’ll be linking to the version 2 guide I followed. Note that the exploit website link in the video is expired, look in the comments for the current ps3xploit web page. At this time, that is ps3xploit.com/writer/index_nor.html and ps3xploit.com/writer/index_nand.html.

Note: you need to be on update 4.82 in order for this to work. The latest firmware is 4.83 which is not compatible. If you are an earlier firmware than 4.82, then you need to source the Official 4.82 firmware and install it from a USB, then perform the exploit. There are also exploits for version 4.81 and 3.55 that let you run all the same software, so use whatever is most convenient given your situation. It is possible to downgrade your firmware if you are on the wrong version, but I leave that as an exercise to the reader.

CFW can get your PSN account and console banned from the playstation network. Don’t game online with CFW and don’t use the PSN store. Instead, put in another hard drive with official firmware if you want to play online games, or use a different PS3 for that. Personally, I don’t give a damn about online play, but I did make sure to purchase everything I care about from the PSN store first and install it on my PS3 before running the exploit.

Anyway, let’s talk emulation.

Retroarch –

Retroarch on the PS3 is pretty much the same as retroarch on the PC or any other platform. It supports MAME, SNES9X, GensPlus, Gambette, VBANext, and many others. Not only that, newer features like run ahead to reduce latency also work, although performance is a bit limited.

I have been able to get PCE CD games, Sega CD games, lots of arcade, and all the classic 8bit and 16 bit consoles and handhelds working flawlessly. The only issue I have had is that MAME 2003 crashes on me quite a bit, so I use MAME 2000 instead. Accuracy isn’t amazing, but it gets the job done. FB Alpha 2012 is also supported.

You can download the latest version of retroarch from the website, and install it on any PS3 running CFW as a package.

PS3 Backups and ISO creation –

CFW has a tool called Muliman. It is a swiss army knife, all-in-one sort of tool for CFW PS3. You can use the tool to back up your games from a disc to your hard drive, create an ISO image from the files, and use FTP to transfer files to your PC. Using these ISO images, you can load them in RCPS3, an open source PS3 emulator, and play lots of PS3 games on your PC. Provided you are using a copy of a game you actually own, all of this is 100% legal (in USA). As an added bonus, multiman can play these games from your internal hard drive too. I have been able to backup all my PS3 games and put all of my discs in storage.

You can also backup games to an external hard drive and play them that way, although some games will only work if they are backed up to the internal hard drive.

Multiman automatically opens up an FTP server on your PS3 when the app is launched. To use it, just use your favorite FTP client (like filezilla), got into your PS3 network settings to determine your PS3’s IP address, and enter that address into your FTP client and connect. Easy. Lots of guides online if you need it. If the PS3 ISO is small enough, you can also use multiman’s file browser to transfer the file to a flash drive that is formatted to FAT32.

Official Emulation –

The PS3 has official emulation support for PSX and PS2 games. The PSX capabilities are well known. All you have to do is place your PSX ISO or BIN files into a directory in the root of your external hard drive, or the internal hard drive, called PSXISO. You can then use the retro tab in multiman to launch the game.

If you prefer, you can also play your real PSX discs on your PS3 without custom firmware, or use a backup disc of your PSX games with CFW. I have had some trouble getting a few games to run of a hard drive, so the backup disc method has been helpful for me.

For PS2 emulation, you will need to download the Redbug toolbox and install it as a package. In redbug, you can enable DEBUG mode and Cobra mode, which allow you to trick your PS3 into thinking a disc is inserted in the blu ray drive. From there, you can play PS2 ISO games backed up to your internal hard drive, in the PS2 ISO directory. To launch them, just use multiman or ManaGunz. This will kick you back to XMB, where a PS2 disc will show up in your games section. Click the PS2 disc to launch the game.

PS2 support on the PS3 is not limited to fat PS3’s with a built in PS2 chip. Sony created an official PS2 emulator for all PS3 models, and it is used on official firmware to run PS2 classics. You can unlock this emulation on customer firmware for any PS2 ISO, although compatibility is a bit limited.

The PS2 emulation the PS3 is actually really quite good. The outputs at 480p, 720p, or 1080p and performs automatic deinterlacing, so the input lag is rather decent and the image is pretty sharp. Some titles that don’t work on PCSX2, like Enter the Matrix, Shadow of Rome, and Silent Hill games work pretty well or perfectly on this emulator. Performance is not always 100%, but the audio doesn’t crackle or skip when it slows down, you just lose some frames here and there. Very playable and enjoyable. Check out the compatibility list.

The official emulator can be configured with config files that are editable with a hex editor. Like PC emulators, settings can be turned on or off to improve gameplay or compatibility. Using a tool called Managunz, you can download and install premade config files, and that works great. Check out the following tutorials below for more details.

SCUMMVM –

The latest version of SCUMMVM works great on PS3. Simply download the package and install it on your CFW PS3. The left stick is mapped to mouse movement, the X is the left click, the circle is right click, and escape is triangle. I have been able to get all of my favorite SCUMMVM games, like Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island 1-3, leisure suit larry 1-6, and many more games working flawlessly.

DOSBox –

DOSBox is also supported on the PS3, with the mouse mapped to the left joystick and support for the onscreen keyboard. I haven’t used DOSbox on my PS3, but from what I have read it is capable of emulating games with up to 10,000 DOSBOX cycles. This puts it more or less on part with a fast 386, which means later DOS games probably won’t run that well, but earlier DOS games should work fine.

Cfw

VICE – VICE is a commodore emulator for the C64/C128/C16 and similar micro computes. I haven’t tried this on myself, but it is supported.

Classic Games and Various Ports –

Something else I wanted to mention was the pretty vast library of official PS3 titles that are actually ports, or remasters, of classic games. This isn’t emulation of course, but it does allow you to open up your library to a huge number of classic titles previously release on PC or earlier home consoles. Usually these games get the HD treatment, wide screen support, and HUD changes to match the PS3 controller. This also includes dozens of great PS2 remasters, and is easily my favorite part of the official PS3 library. Check out this list of HD remasters for more details.

Consoles and systems represented here include…

Dreamcast: Nights into Dreams, Crazy Taxi, Daytona USA, Jet Set Radio, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2

Classic PC: Farcry, F.E.A.R., Serious Sam 3, Doom 3, Half Life 2 Episodes 1&2, Portal (half life one was ported to ps2 and works pretty well with emulation!)

DOS: Doom pack (1,2,ultimate), Duke Nukem 3D, Prince of Persia

480

PS2: Jak Series, Metal Gear Solid Series, Kingdom Hearts, and basically every other good or decent game ever released for the PS2.

Other: Duck Tales, Afterburner, Mickey Castle of Illusion

And many more…

Note: Make sure to download any PSN titles before performing CFW. Don’t risk your account getting banned by purchasing them after applying the exploit!

Conclusion –

The PS3 is a great console, its cheap, it’s easy to hack, and it runs lots of games. You can hook it up via HDMI, component, S-video, and composite to any TV you can imagine. The controllers are wireless and rechargeable, the thing plays blu rays movies and games, you can swap out the hard drive for up to a 1tb model, and you can connect FAT32 external hard drives up to a 2TB capacity. You can emulate tons of consoles and games, backup PS3 for emulation, and more. Chances are good that if you have a PS3 it can probably run CFW, or if you buy one online it will probably work too. I have had a lot of fun making my PS3 uber bad ass, and I hope this overview points people in the right direction if they want to do the same. Cheers.

Not so long ago, Sony released Firmware 4.80 which was an yet another stability update. Rebug CFW is back as well with a few new features. Of course, the Cobra 7.3 payload isn’t missing from this release. That means you will no longer need the PS2 Launcher to play PS2 game,s you can launch them now directly via the Disc Icon from the XMB and many other cool features! But take a look yourself below.

How to install 4.80.1 Rebug REX/D-REX

  1. Download the Rebug PS3UPDAT.PUP from the official Rebug site (there are two versions, one for CEX and the other one for DEX Systems, choose the one you need)
  2. Create on a FAT32 formatted USB Flash Drive a Folder called PS3, then into this one, another one called UPDATE
  3. Copy the PS3UPDAT.PUP in the UPDATE Folder.
